REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The activities of foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should strengthen the Indonesian government's programs, Secretary General of Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mayerfas stated.

"Any foreign NGO cannot work alone without establishing communication and cooperation with the government," he noted during the dissemination of information on government regulations and Directory of Foreign Non-governmental Organizations in Indonesia in 2017 in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Mayerfas said the activities of foreign NGOs in Indonesia had to be in line with the work plans of related ministries, as the partners of mass organizations, and were aligned with the local governments' priority programs in order to offer maximum benefits to the people.

Furthermore, he said currently, some 86 foreign mass organizations were operating legally in Indonesia. The organizations were engaged in several areas, including social and health fields.

"So far, we have always conducted reviews of various foreign NGOs, including about their activities," he revealed.

Moreover, he said the licensing team of foreign mass organizations should ensure that the organizations can contribute to the development of the Indonesian nation and benefit the community.

He said foreign mass organizations, whose activities are contrary to the provisions and interests of Indonesia, will not be allowed to operate in the country.

"Foreign NGOs residing in a country must comply with the existing provisions in that country, or else, the country will reject the organization," he emphasized.

Hence, he said in issuing permits to operate in Indonesia, the government continues to take into account the pros and cons of the existence of the organizations.
