4.5-magnitude quake hits Aceh

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit the westernmost Indonesian province of Aceh on Tuesday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) office in Aceh province said.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 10.56 a.m. local time was located 32 kilometers northwest of Calang town in Aceh Jaya district at a depth of 51 kilometers, the head of the BMKG office, Eridawati said.

However, the quake caused no tsunami.

"We call on the people living in Aceh Java and its surrounding areas to remain calm. They should not easily be incited by rumors," he said.

A 35-year old local resident, Tono, said he did not feel the quake.

"I did not feel it perhaps the quake was too small," he said.
