Sileri Crater explodes, tourism spots in Dieng are closed

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANYUMAS – Great explosions were reported to happen at Sileri Crater, Dieng Plateau, Kepakisan, Banjarnegara, Central Java on Sunday (July 2).  

The Head of Dieng Volcano Observation Post of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Surip said the explosions happened at 12.00 pm.

"It was 50 meters of height, reached the parking area of water boom,” he said.

During the incident, there were 10 tourists near the Sileri Crater. They were exposed to mud, but they were not severely injured. They were treated by the medical staffs at Batur Health Center.

PVMBG had recommended 100 meters of danger radius since Juny 24. He did not know whether it would be expanded after the incident.

“It depends on the central office’s decision. We still collecting the data,” he said.

The explosion consisted of gas, smoke and material and triggered by gas pressures under the surface. Banjarnegara Disaster Management Agency reported more tourists and visitors on the location. 

Four people injured and being treated at Batur I Health Center. No death reported after the incident.

These were the names of victims:

1. Mirotun (30), lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.  

2. Ayu Nur Aeni (10), lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

3. Muzaefah (32), lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

4. Haromi (55) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

5. Heti Handayani (13) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

6. Nur Holisoh (24) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

7. Zulfa Yanti (9) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

8. Badru Utamam (37) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud, injured at feet.

9. Moh Fidsa Aswa Muzafar (2) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, blisted above the left ear and right hand.

10. Muh Zahromi (50) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, exposed by mud with no injuries.

11. Mutamimah (31), lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, no injuries.

12. Siti Hudifah (30) lived at Sabrang, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, no injuries.

13. Muainah (44) lived at lived at Kauman, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, the wound was covered by the broken left arm (would be transferred to Pekalongan).

14. Toyibah (50) lived at Kauman, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, no injuries but shocked. 

15. Nurbaiti (12) lived at Kauman, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, no injuries but shocked.

16. Cucu Nofalia (26) lived at Kauman, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, no injuries but hard to breathe.

17. Ika Setiyani (25) lived at Kauman, Peninggaran, Pekalongan, injured in the left back head.

A number of BPBD Banjarnegara, PVMBG, Military Unit, National Police, Regional Working Unit, volunteers and other personnel had been in the location. The visitors and the people were asked to leave the location. The crater area had been emptied. Potential aftershocks might still happen.

Sileri Crater was a tourism object in Dieng Plateau. It had a unique form with flat depression, so the water of the crater was always boiling. Hot water kept flowing to the lower places. The water area was four hectares.

The crater was very active and had ever exploded for several times, in 1939, 1944, 1964, 1984, 2003 and 2009. It was the most dangerous crater in Dieng. Recently Dieng Volcano was normally active. There was no status increase was reported after the incident.
