REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALANGKA RAYA – Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Nyaru Menteng Foundation reported dozens of orangutan were killed in Central Kalimantan. The numbers were not included those which were died after having upper respiratory tract infection on forest and land fire.

The Spokesperson of BOS Nyaru Menteng Foundation Monterado Fridman said orangutan had been endangered and it could be extinct at any time. “Recently there were 480 orangutan rehabilitated at BOS Nyaru Menteng. Only 280 were released during 2015-2017. The data showed orangutan have been endangered,” said him in Palangkaraya on Tuesday (June 27).

People seemed to be unaware of endangered orangutan. Law enforcement to those who killed orangutan was also seemed to be not strict. Some big cases punished the perpetrators for only two years and nine months of imprisonment.

Montero exemplified the case in Tumbang Puroh, Kapuas, Central Kalimantan. There were more than a person slaughtered, cooked and consumed orangutan. The same case were happened in Kandan and Mangkutub River

“In 2016, there were orangutan died after being burnt. We never now the progress of the case,” he said.

Montero expected that the cases would encourage the people to preserve the primates. It was an implementation of Law No. 5 in 1990 on Biodiversity and Ecosystem. It stated that orangutan was wild animal, not pet.

Orangutan was belonged to the state. Central and local government’s roles were needed to give additional forest for saving orangutan’s living. “Orangutan must live in the forest, not in rehabilitation center. This year BOs implemented the year of Orangutan Freedom. If there is no forest, where will we release them?” Montero asked.
