REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALU – Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin responded requests to repeal the law No. 1/PNPS in 1965 on the prevention of blasphemy. He said there should be strong reason to repealing it. 

Lukman said, it would be hard for the government to handle the blasphemy case when the country did not have any blasphemy law. “We should see the reason behind the law or articles related to blasphemy. If we don’t have any law on blasphemy, how will we handle the case on it?” said Lukman in Palu on Monday (May 15). 

Lukman argued that Indonesian people lives under different ethnics, religions, races and groups. It should be kept by mandatory regulations, in order to make it easy to resolve any related problems. 

“Seeing the reality of our multiculturalism, I think we need a law to regulate any dispute of blasphemy. If we bring it to a legal process, we need an agreement to be guideline to resolve any blasphemy cases,” said the politician of United Development Party (PPP).  

Lukman added that the idea to repeal the Law of Blasphemy cannot be roughly executed. It needed very careful consideration on whether the law violated the human rights. 

“I think we need to be really careful in repealing the law and articles related to blasphemy. and then what we use? It is not the law that violates, but the verdict must meet the sense of justice,” said Lukman.
