Many Indonesian nationals become victims of human trafficking: Foreign Ministry

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA —  Many Indonesian nationals became victims of human trafficking crime. Recently, 51 Indonesian people were found to be victims of human trafficking in Malaysia. They became workers in an illegal processing factory of Swift’s nest in Klang, Selangor. 

The Spokesperson of Foreign Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir said the factory had 150 employees. As many as 51 people among them were victims of human trafficking from Indonesia, 92 people were Indonesian workers and three others were foreigners who violated immigration rules in Malaysia.

"They are now in the Putra Jaya Immigration Office and the case is processed,” said Tata in Jakarta on Thursday (March 30).

Tata said all the victims had got legal assistances from Indonesian Embassy to Malaysia, in a protection house for women. Malaysian Court also gave protection until April 18. 

In Sukabumi, there were also 567 people in Sukabumi become victims of human trafficking during 2007-2015. Deputy of Women and Children Protection Division in the Ministry of Human Development and Culture Sujatmiko said hundreds of them were exploited economically and sexually or became mail-order brides. 

“Data 2007-2015 shows there are 567 people in Sukabumi became the victims,” said Deputy of Women and Children Protection Division in the Ministry of Human Development and Culture Sujatmiko to reporters in Sukabumi on Wednesday (March 29). 

He said the government would take firm action to decrease the rate of human trafficking cases in Sukabumi and other regions. Based on the Law No. 21 in 2007 on Combating Human Trafficking Crime, the people who involved in the case would get strong punishment starting from 15 years of imprisonment. 

He said many perpetrators were punished by the law. Many Private Indonesian Manpower Supplier Companies (PPTKIS) got punishment by the government. He hoped there would no citizen try to involve in human trafficking case.
