REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar was preparing anticipation and supporting data related to the damaged coral reef in Raja Ampat, West Papua. The captain of Caledonian Sky cruise ship might use insurance to solve the problems.
"What if the captain says he will solve this by using insurance. We need to be aware as if they use their insurance; there will be many argumentations to ask for small compensation. Therefore we try to collect as many as data,” said Siti in Jakarta on Monday (20/3).
Siti also sent some personnel to update the information and condition in the field. All the data would be coordinated with the Coordinating Minister of Marine, so the data would be valid. The ministry also prepared justified argument related to the Law Number 32 in 2009, Law No. 5 Year 1990 on Biodiversity and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
He admitted that there were some interesting progresses in the field, such as the idea to handle the problem with UNCLOS. But, it would be decided after the study.
Previously, British cruise ship Caledonian Sky crashed coral reef in Kri Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua. As many as 1.600 square meter of coral reef damaged on the incident, while the cruise ship did not got significant damage. The 4.290 ton cruise ship brought 102 passengers from New Guinea to Philippine.
