REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- British Ambassador to Indonesia Moazzam Malik met the co-ordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan on Friday (March 17). They discussed the recent maritime and environmental incident in the West Papua. “We are disappointed to hear about damage to the coral reef in West Papua – as we are with any environmental incident,” said Moazzam.

He gave his support to Indonesian authorities to investigate the cruise ship crash and to seek restitution for the coral reef damage. He hoped it can be resolved quickly and smoothly between the Indonesian Government and the cruise ship company managing the expedition. “We are happy to provide any advice and support if the Indonesian authorities need to take forward their investigative and claims process,” he said in a statement received by Republika.co.id on Friday.

Moazzam added that the cruise ship Caledonia Sky is owned, crewed, managed and operated by a Swedish company namely Salen Ship Management. It was based in Gothenberg. The cruise holiday company was based in London but also Swedish owned.

Moazzam said the private companies involved had expressed regret and responsibility. The British Ambassador stated to understand that the company were ready to work out a fair and realistic settlement. It also understood that their representatives were already working with the Indonesian authorities.
