Govt takes three actions to restore coral reef in Raja Ampat

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Coordinating Minister of Marine Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said the government took three actions in restoring the coral reef crashed by MV Caledonian Sky cruise ship in Raja Ampat, West Papua. “Three actions will be taken. Firstly, evaluating the damage. It is ongoing now.  Secondly, how to legally process the case. This would involved many parties. And third, how to avoid the occurance of such case. So it needs regulation,” said Luhut ini Jakarta on Friday.

According to Luhut, an integrated team had checked the crash location to evaluate the coral reef damage. He said the damage was a serious problem as it needed 50-100 years to restore the coral reef. “This is the problem of environmental damage. The fishes are gone as well,” he said.

Previously, a British cruise ship Caledonian Sky with Keith Michael Taylor as its captain crashed coral reef in Raja Ampat on Saturday (March 4). Preliminary investigation showed 1.600 square meters of coral reef area was damaged in the incident. The area was located in the center of Raja Ampat. It was also the center of its sea biodiversity.

The Indonesian government planned to sue for getting compensation and asking Keith’s responsibility. The captain was known to have same experience of a violation in Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra. He rode his ship at the anchor inappropriately.
