Law enforcement against tax evasion starts in April: Minister

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said law enforcement will begin on April 1 this year against tax evasion immediately after the deadline of the tax amnesty program on March 31.

Tax payers should use the remaining days to take part in the tax amnesty program which began in July, 2016, the minister said addressing a group of 200 business players in the fishery sector at the Marine and Fishery Ministry here on Tuesday. She said among 200 big tax payers among business players in the fishery sector only 147 taking part in the tax amnesty program. "Take part in the tax amnesty and you can declare assets , pay the penalty and you would feel relieved free of worry," she said.

She said business people should pay taxes and don't wait until the government take firm measures. Marine ans Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti there are still many business people in the fishery sector reluctant to properly report their catch fair and square. "Industry complains about shortage in basic material but there are fishermen committing transshipment in the sea to smuggle out their fish catch," Susi said.

Susi said the level of success of the tax amnesty program would be remain below expectation until the tax payers are aware of their obligations. Meanwhile banking observer from East Nusa Tenggara Piet Djemadu reminded tax payers of they have only a few days left to take advantage of the tax amnesty program.

Piet said those not yet taking part in the program should use the opportunity or face risk of being thrown into jail for tax evasion. "He said there would be no way escaping punishment for tax evasion," he said in Kupang on Monday.

In Yogyakarta, the regional office of the Taxation Directorate General (DJP) said it would move against tax evasion immediately after the end of the tax amnesty program. "We have coordinated with police, the military and the prosecution office to go against tax defaulters after the March 31 deadline," head of the Investigation, Collection and Intelligence and Education of the Yogyakarta DJP Fajar Adi Prabawa last week.

The Yogyakarta DJP has also coordinated with the regional Justice and Human Right Office, Fajar said. "We have prepared a detention cell for delinquent tax payers to give them a deterrent effect. We will set them free after they settle their tax obligation," he said.
