REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The agency has been implementing a multipronged strategy in facing the threats of radicalism and terrorism, National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief Commissioner General Suhardi Alius stated. "There is no single strategy, as terror groups are always moving dynamically and adapting to the evolving situation locally, nationally, and globally," Alius stated while opening the National Working Meeting of the Coordination Forum for Prevention of Terrorism (FKPT) here on Tuesday night.

According to Alius, one of the strategies employed by the BNPT in countering terrorism is to involve all components of the nation, especially community leaders and local forces in the areas through the FKPT.  "The FKPT is part of the counter-radicalization strategy to fortify society against the influence of radical ideology," the BNPT chief noted.

Further, he stated that strengthening the local values is viewed as being an effective measure in preventing terrorism and the influence of radical ideology, as cultural values and local wisdom can reinforce solidarity and cohesiveness in society.

Hence, the BNPT believes that the involvement of most local figures can serve as a vanguard in solving local problems, including the issues of radicalism and terrorism.

Alius said radicalism and terrorism are issues arising from flawed ideology and beliefs, and hence, the use of bullets, arrests, and law enforcement techniques are not the sole ways of stopping terrorist activities in Indonesia.

According to Alius, the FKPT offers the right momentum to enforce togetherness and solidarity in the fight against various forms of threats of violence, which may disrupt public peace and sovereignty.

The Indonesian government is constantly on the lookout for terrorists by collecting information and data and cross-checking them to track cells of terror networks in order to foil their plans to endanger the security of society. As an enemy of the international society, terrorism can threaten the state's stability, lead to violence and loss of life, and disrupt the lives of people seeking peace.

Dangerous and widespread terror acts have drawn the attention of all global communities and countries, prompting them to jointly combat the menace. Alius noted that all boards of the FKPT should be able to boost self-resilience against the effects of radical and terrorist ideology while building early detection mechanisms through concern for society.  "Terrorism can crop up anywhere and at any time in unexpected ways. The perpetrators are also part of the community, and at any time, they can be present around us," he cautioned.

Hence, the BNPT chief expressed hope that the FKPT would serve as a formidable force and a vital capital in stemming radical understanding that has the potential to plunge the society into violence and terrorism.
