Insulting the Quran, Turkish media eyes on Jakarta's governor

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A massive demonstration by a number of Islamic organizations in Jakarta on Friday (10/16) has caught the attention not only the Indonesian, but also Turkish media. The people urged the authority to bring Jakart Governor Basuki Tjahaja Basuki Purnama (Ahok) into justice after he committed religious blasphemy Alquran surah Al Maidah verse 51.

"I read the news in the Turkey media saying that Jakarta residents protest because the governor insulted the Alquran," a Turkish citizens told Republika.co.id on condition of anonymity, on Sunday (16/10).

Nearly all media in Turkey reported the news. Turkish media, he said, supported the protests. Even some media in Turkey reported protest news as the headline.

Turkey and Indonesia have similarities related to religion and ideology. "I read about that, one million Indonesian citizens demonstrate against the governor for insulting the Alquran," he said.

He said Turkish citizens would be angry if someone insulted the Alquran. He appreciated the mass protests.The demonstration was appreciated by the police as it did not end up anarchy.
