REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya city legislative council's special committee for drafting a bylaw on health will soon deliberate on the rules regarding employment of foreign medical workers at the city's hospitals. The rules were incorporated in the draft bylaw which is being deliberated at the legislative council, chief of the committee Khusnul Khotimah said here on Wednesday.
"We will discuss the rules including the period for which foreign medical workers can be allowed to work here and the number of times their work contracts can be extended," she added.
She made it clear that as long as the need for specialist doctors is not met, they will be allowed to work in the city. She expressed the hope that local medical workers studying at home and abroad on government scholarships will be willing to work in Surabaya.
This will help meet the need for specialist doctors in the city. "As per the medical profession rules, those pursuing higher education on government scholarships must dedicate themselves to their respective region," she noted.
She further noted that many residents are unable to find access to standard medical services as expected. "For instance, when it comes to e-health, only IT literate residents can afford it," she reminded.
