Duterte and Jokowi will discuss hot issues

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will meet the president of Philippines Rodrigo Duterte in Jakarta on Thursday (8/9).

Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir said Jokowi and Duterte will discuss hot issues. There is no discussion by the two leaders while attending the ASEAN conference in Laos and no bilateral meetings since Monday until today. Duterte going to Jakarta after the ASEAN event completed.

"The two leaders will meet in Jakarta, and hold substantive discussions in here," Arrmanatha said to Republika.co.id, on Wednesday (7/9).

According to him, the two leaders will discuss a number of issues such as trilateral cooperation, hostage, pilgrims, economic cooperation, and many more. However, he did not comment on the issue of narcotic convict on death row Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso exchange with Indonesian pilgrims. During the summit, President Jokowi has attended 15 meetings. According to Foreign Affairs minister Retno Marsudi, the President stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region.

"The president also affirmed the unity and centrality of ASEAN in handling regional issues," Retno said.

ASEAN summit is scheduled until September 8, 2016 in Vientiane, Laos.

Jokowi’s wife Iriana Widodo, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, Retno, and Trade Minister Enggartiasto accompanied him.
