REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT) and the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) have established partnership to formulate a concept to fight terrorism.
"We are coordinating to establish strategic steps to counter terrorism, especially within the framework of human rights, and we need advice from the Commission," the agency's Chief Suhardi Alius stated at the Komnas HAM offices in Jakarta, Wednesday.
The former chief of the Jakarta Police's Criminal Unit explained that Komnas HAM will be working with the agency to handle cases of terrorism involving human rights issues.
Both institutions will also join forces to disseminate anti-radicalism information.
"This is an initial concept, and we will conduct meetings in future to further discuss this idea and later implement the concept. We will all be present on the field and tackle the issues first hand," he revealed.
On the same occasion, Head of Komnas HAM Imdadun Rahmat noted that collaboration between the two institutions is appropriate as they both have been directed by the nation to protect the people from acts of violence and terrorism.
"From the human rights perspective, acts of terrorism are considered as extraordinary crimes and for that reason, the nation has the responsibility to respond through measures that will tackle the situation," he remarked.
Moreover, Rahmat said both government institutions have agreed to oversee the revision of regulations on terrorism to ensure that they work effectively and positively in preventing and banishing acts of terrorism.
"We will also ensure that human rights are upheld in our efforts to eradicate terrorism, so the regulations need to be improved with time," he added.
