REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Parliamentary delegation's Chairman, Al Muzzamil Yusuf, is campaigning to nominate Palestinian figure Marwan Barghouti for Nobel Peace Prize, noted a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, received by Antara here, Friday.
The Indonesian House of Representatives' visit to Amman aims at holding a meeting with members of the Palestinian parliament on July 17-23, 2016, in order to boost bilateral relations.
The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Ramallah, but due to Israel's actions and policies that block entry to Palestinian territories, the meeting's venue was moved to Amman.
The meeting is being held at the office of the Palestinian National Council in Amman, Jordan.
Al Muzzamil vowed to bring the nomination proposal for discussion in the Indonesian Parliament.
Ibrahim Krisha, a Palestinian Legislative Council member, said Barghouti is a Palestinian freedom fighter and also a prominent Fatah leader, who was arrested by Israel in 2002.
Barghouti is currently serving five life sentences, which accumulates to 500 years in prison.
Currently, the Palestinian parliament and human rights activists as well as politicians are undertaking a global campaign to nominate Barghouti as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The nomination campaign holds significance to draw sympathy for Barghouti, Palestinian parliament members, and some five thousand Palestinians, who have been arrested by Israel.
In addition, the nomination of Barghouti highlights the fact that Palestinians should be free from Israeli occupation.
Ibrahim hoped the Indonesian Parliament will support the nomination of Barghouti for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Indonesian Ambassador to Jordan Teguh Wardoyo affirmed Indonesia's stance to continue supporting the Palestinian struggle for independence.
