Medan aims for a city free from trash

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- Medan City Government continues to work to make it into a city of a waste-free city.

Vice Mayor of Medan, Akhyar Nasution said, one of the main programs that Medan municipal government created is to have the city of Medan to be clean and free of debris that also supported various other development programs.

"As one of the major cities in Indonesia, Medan can able to become a role model for maintaining cleanliness," he said in Medan, on Friday (24/6).

To realize the waste-free city, of course, the support of the entire community is vitally important, for example by keeping the environment clean and disposing of waste according to schedule that has been determined by the municipal government. Medan city administration itself has to implement a scheduled time for transporting waste, which is 4:30 pm until 8:00 pm to transport the garbage in the streets of the protocol.

After that, at 08.00 pm till 10:00 pm officers will transport the garbage in residential communities from different alleyway by bestari becak. "And from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm, the officer will transport the garbage in the streets from collectors. For that I hope that people can dispose of garbage at the appointed hour," he said.

Social observers of North Sumatra, Jos Rizal, say, it requires good cooperation between local government and the communities, especially in terms progressing to various development programs. “This movement is included in the efforts to realize for a vision of having a city clean. If there is no awareness from the public then weight to realize these desires will not be met,” he said.
