REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Suryamin said based on the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index of World Economic Forum (WEF), Indonesian tourism currently is ranked 50th.

"This mean that the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism is still lagging due to constraints in development of tourism in infrastructure, environment development, and health and hygiene," he said in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Thursday (2/6).

According to Suryamin, sustainable tourism can be achieved if supported by adequate instruments such as the availability of infrastructure and facilities.

The investment was needed to build new infrastructure with environmentally friendly technologies, transport and accommodation to minimize energy consumption, water supply and renewable energy facility, waste treatment until public facilities such as telecommunications and healthcare.

"The governments, both central and local, have roles to create interesting situation for the private sector to invest in the tourism industry," he said.
