Govt supports appeal for Rita case

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Domestic workers (maids) from Ponorogo, East Java, Rita Krisdianti sentenced to death by the Malaysian courts. Rita caught with narcotics weighing 4 kilograms at Penang Airport.

The government has tried various measures to lighten Rita's punishment. One of them is pointed a lawyer since the case is rolling.

 

The Ministry of Manpower (Kemenaker) expressed support for the appeal case will be made by the lawyer Rita.

"Coordination among agencies in an effort to mitigation of punishment for Rita ongoing and will continue, hopefully we can give its verdict," said Director General of Employment and Expansion, Heri Sudarmanto, in a press statement received Republika.co.id Thursday (2/6).

He said what happen to Rita will be a lesson for the Indonesian government and workers in abroad. He added, supply of potential workers will be intensified so that prospective workers more aware of the law and are not easily persuaded by bids that are not clear.

Kemenaker, he said, had repeatedly socialize at shelter and training prior to the departure of migrant workers abroad.

"So that workers are not easily tempted by blandishments that are not clear, in the future we will intensify," Heri said.
