Indonesia sends 52 players to Singapore Open

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia has sent 52 players to participate in the Singapore Badminton Open being held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from April 12 to 17.

According to the tournamentsoftware website monitored by Antara here on Tuesday, the players participating in the event have so far taken part in three super series tournaments since the India Open.

The players include Wibowo Kho Henrikho, Evert Sukamta, and Panji Akbar and senior player Sony Dwi Kuncoro who will start the tournament from the men's singles qualification round.

Four other players --- Anthony Ginting, Tommy Sugiarto, Ihsan Maulana Mustofa, and Jonatan Christie --- have gained direct entry into the main round of the tournament.

Desi Hera, Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto, Lyanny Alessandra Mainaky, and Yulia Yosephin Susanto will also start the tournament, which offers a total prize worth US$350 thousand from the qualification round, while Linda Wenifanetri and Maria Febe Kusumastuti will go straight to the main round.

Three Indonesian men's doubles pairs --- Aji Firmansyah/Hendra Tandjaya, Arya Maulana Adiartama/Afiat Yuris Wirawan, and Hantoro/Rikcy Alvarino Sidarta --- will start from the qualification round.

If the players clear the round, they will meet Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, Berry Angriawan/Rian Agung Saputro, Markis Kido/Hendra Aprida Gunawan, and Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan in the main round.

The Singapore Open 2016 will not feature the women's doubles qualification round but Indonesian pairs --- Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah/Rizki Amelia Pradipta, Della Destiara Haris/Rosyita Eka Putri Sari, Natasha Herloardjo/Rofahadah Supriadi Putri, Apriani Rahayu/Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto, Keshya Nurvita Hanadia/Devi Tika Permatasari, and Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda Maheswari --- are already part of the main round.

Indonesian women's player Pia Zebadia Bernadeth will pair with her Indian counterpart Nelakurihi Sikki Reddy to contest in the main round.

Two Indonesian mixed doubles pairs --- Hendra Tandjaya/Rofahadah Supriadi Putri and Yehezkiel Fritz Mainaky/Lyanny Alessandra Mainaky --- will clash in the qualification round to follow their seniors in the main round.

Five Indonesian mixed doubles pairs to play in the main round are Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, Edi Subaktiar/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto, Irfan Fadhilah/Weni Anggaraini, and Markis Kido/Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth.

Rexy Mainaly, the head of achievement and development affairs of the All Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI), stated in the PBSI website that Indonesia had two representatives who will play with confidence to win the titles. They are Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir in the mixed doubles event and Jonatan Christie in the men's singles event.

"Players in the women's singles and doubles events also have strong will to perform better in the Singapore Open," he added.
