REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- British Embassy to Indonesia and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) signed a memorandum of understanding on counter-terrorism efforts and radical ideologies. The event was held at the headquarters of the NU, Kramat Raya, Central Jakarta, Friday.

Chairman of the NU Said Aqil Siradj assessed the signing of the MOU is the moment to promote the concept of Islam Nusantara NU. "It is important to understand the concept of Islam Nusantara," he explained.

He said in Islam Nusantara NU combining the concept of Islam with nationalism. This, according to him, characterized the differences between Islam in Indonesia and the Middle East.

Because in Islam Nusantara, to defend the country, said Said, is a part of faith.

While in the Middle East, Said said, the cleric was not included as a nationalist. Likewise nationalists, who are not necessarily classified as a scholar.

''Therefore, scholars in the Middle East are not able to reduce conflicts there," he said.

Starting from this, NU, said Said, always seeks to combat terrorism and radicalism as a form of action to defend the country. "Obviously this is based on the spirit of Islam Nusantara," he said.

On the occasion of the signing of a memorandum of understanding, Said also asked the British ambassador, Moazzam Malik to convey to his government, that NU aggressively combat extreme and radical understanding in Indonesia.
