REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SERANG -- The Agriculture and Animal Husbandry service of Banten has set its corn production target at 38,489 tons in dry grains this year as part of its program of self sufficiency in corn and soybean supply in the province.
Head of the service Agus M Tauchid said the target is higher than last year's production of 11,870 tons.
Banten's corn production has grown steadily over the past few years , Agus said, adding in 2014 production was recorded at only 10,514 tons.
He said corn fields in Banten total around 10,468 hectares with harvest area of 9,945 hectares and production around 3.870 kilograms per hectare.
Productivity is expected to improve with the cultivation of hybrid corn over 6,000 hectares of the plantations including 3,000 hectares in the district of Pandeglang, 2,00 hectares in the district of Serang and 1,000 hectares in the district of Lebak.
Around 90 tons of hybrid corn seeds have been grown including 45 tons in the district of Pandeglang 45 ton, 15 tons of in the district of Lebak and 30 tons in the district of Serang.
Hybrid corn plantations is also expanded over 2,562 hectares of forest lands of the state owned forestry company Perhutani including 1,234 hectares in the district of Pandeglang and 1,328 hectares in the district of Lebak.
"The corn seeds needed in the land of Perhutani are around 38.43 tons," Agus said.
