REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) said construction of the 3rd and 4th units of PLTP Ulubelu geothermal power plant in Tenggamus, Lampung is now 79.65 percent completed.

PGE President Director Irfan Zainuddin said each of the two new units will have a capacity of 55 megawatts.

The 3rd unit is to be commercially operational in August 2016 and the 4th unit would follow in June 2017, Irfan said here on Thursday.

"We are optimistic the project would be completed as scheduled," he said.

Construction of the two units is estimated to cost US$397 million financed by the parent company state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina, and a loan from the World Bank.

The 1st and 2bd units of PLTP Ulubelu each with a capacity of 55 MW, are already operational 2012.

The two units could meet only 12.8 percent of Lampung's power requirement .

If the two new facilities come on line in 2017, PLTP Ulubelu will have a total capacity of 220 MW equivalent to 9,570 barrels of oil per day.

With the operation of the 3rd and 4th units, PLTP Ulubelu would contribute 25 percent to the power requirement of Lampung.

Irfan said PGE has set a target to build geothermal power plants with a total capacity of 1,000 MW in 2021 and 2,700 MW in 2030.

Currently PGE has 12 geothermal working concessions with a total capacity of 437 MW including 235 MW from Kamojang, 110 MW from Ulubelu , 80 MW from Lahendong, and 12 MW from Sibayak.

"Meanwhile, PGE is building and plans to build new geothermal power generating facilities with a total capacity of 510 MW," Irfan said.

From the Hululais and Sungai Penuh geothermal concessions, PGE only sells the geothermal steam to state owned electricity company PT PLN. Construction of the power plants is to be handled by PLN.
