REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya chapter of the National Mandate Party (PAN) has rejected a draft municipal regulation, which allows hypermarkets and supermarkets to sell alcoholic drinks.

"PAN stands firm against any municipal regulation legalizing the circulation of alcoholic drinks at supermarkets and kiosks," the Chairman of the PAN Chapter in Surabaya Surat said here on Thursday.

In fact, the ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks at hypermarkets and supermarket has been set forth in law, presidential decree and ministerial regulation, he said.

"In contrast, we will support any bylaw banning the circulation of alcoholic drinks," he said.

The draft municipal regulation has been deliberated at a level of special committee. The consultative body (Banmus) of the Surabaya municipal government is expected to discuss it at a plenary meeting to decide whether it could be endorsed by a municipal regulation.

"PAN has its faction in the DPRD of Surabaya. All of our aspirations will be channeled by the faction. We ask the faction to play a positive role in the consultative body by rejecting the draft municipal regulation," he said.
