Former Gafatar members must be given guidance in persuasive ways

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Thousands of former Fajar Nusantara Movement (Gafatar) members had been repatriated to their origin region from West Borneo. Chairman of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nasir said there should be further action in the handling of them.

Haedar asked all society, started from police, government, and religious leaders to participate in the handling of former Gafatar members. He explained police must do monitoring and investigate figures and leaders of Gafatar in order to be prosecuted.

"The clerics have an important role in providing guidance to former Gafatar members. For the members who already have a strong ideology, they should be given special and intensive guidance," Haedar told Republika on Tuesday (2/2).

Meanwhile, for the former Gafatar members who only became a victim, they should be given persuasive guidance by religious approach.

In addition, he said the government must be present to provide solutions for the former Gafatar members, related to their welfare. Ministry of Social Affairs and Ministry of Manpower obliged to empower and help them.
