REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said, illegal export of Indonesian pearls mostly occurred in large amount. This made value of pearl trade in Indonesia was small compared to other marine countries.
Based on data of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in 2014, Indonesia's pearl trade value reached 28.7 million US dollars. It was much smaller than Hong Kong, which reached 1.16 billion US dollars.
"Pearls farming in Indonesia, particularly in eastern Indonesia, commonly owned by foreigners with a few local workers. Many of those perform illegal exports so that our people got nothing from our sea," said Susi, Tuesday (12/1).
Susi also promised to investigate the illegal export and check all relevant permits regarding pearl cultivation in Indonesia. Not only pearls, Susi added, some seafood from Indonesian waters were also exported illegally, such as lobsters and eels.
Director General of Customs and Excise of Ministry of Finance Heru Pambudi promised to cooperate with Quarantine Fish Quality Control Agency to supervise export and import of marine products in the waters of Indonesia.
