El Nino in Indonesia predicted to end in April

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Head of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Andi Sakya said, until this January, el nino in Indonesia would still be strong, at the level of 2.3. El Nino that has hit Indonesia since last October 2015, was predicted to end in April.

Andi stated, El Nino is a phenomenon that is rather difficult to be predicted. El Nino in Indonesia not only caused drought in some areas, but also reduced water content in the soil.

"The impact of El Nino reached southern region of the equator. While, northern of the equator was not affected," Andi said, Monday (4/1).

Andi revealed, El Nino also caused the rainfall was not as much as in the same period of previous year. Although, Indonesia has at least 342 local season zone and each zone has its tropical characteristics.

Many parties stated, El Nino impact on food security in Indonesia. In fact, according to Andi, El Nino affected areas only in southern of the equator. So that, food security could be centralized in the northern region of the equator.

"El Nino also makes the surface of the sea in Indonesia becomes cooler. This contributes to the high chlorophyll at sea. So many fish passing in the waters of Indonesia," Andi explained.
