1,582 disaster hit Indonesia in 2015

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that there were 1,582 natural disasters occurred in Indonesia throughout 2015. The amount decreased by 20 percent compared to last year.

In 2014, BNPB recorded 1,967 natural disasters that occurred in Indonesia. Head of Data Information and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, more than 95 percent of hydro-meteorological disasters occurred in 2015, such as tornados, landslides, and floods.

"The disasters has caused 240 people died and 1.18 million people displaced," said Sutopo, Saturday (26/12).

The disasters, he added, has also resulted 4,977 houses were heavily damaged, 3,461 houses were damaged, and 15,927 were slightly damaged. Meanwhile, number of public facilities that damaged reached 484 units.

"landslides as the deadliest disaster, causing 147 deaths," Sutopo continued.

Moreover, throughout 2015, 55.7 percent of houses damaged by tornado and 59 percent facilities damaged due to floods.
