REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANJARMASIN -- Head of the south kalimantan public works office Martinus said construction of the Kinarum dam in the regency of Tanjung, in the province has been more than 50 percent completed.

The construction of the dam which will irrigate more than 3,000 hectares of farm lands in that district will cost around Rp45 billion.

Martinus, who is acting mayor of the city of Banjarbaru, said around Rp30 billion of the budget have been used.

"Construction would continue in 2016 until it is completed and operational," he said.

The district is highly potential as a major rice producer, he said.

The dam could also serve as a tourist object as the Kinarum village and Kinarum river are known to have natural beauty, he said.

The Kinarum dam is one of tens of irrigation dams the government plans in its bid to reach self sufficiency in rice supply.
