REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SINGAPORE -- Inuka, Singapore's very own locally born and bred polar bear, on Wednesday (16/12) kicked off a 10-day celebration for his 25th birthday by gobbling down a giant ice cake. Born in his mother's den in the early hours of 26th December 1990, Inuka is the first polar bear to be birthed in the tropics.
As his birthday treat, zookeepers put together a giant ice cake consisting of two colored ice blocks and a watermelon filled with fruit for the 581 kg polar bear, quoted from Channelnewsasia.com.
"(Inuka) is officially in his golden years and we will adjust his care to ensure he continues to enjoy a great quality of life with us here in the Singapore Zoo," said Mr Mike Barclay, CEO of Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
On Wednesday, the Singapore Zoo also launched a photo exhibition to raise awareness on the natural Arctic habitat of polar bears. Ambassador of Denmark to Singapore Berit Basse officiated the launch of Inuka's birthday celebrations and the photo exhibition in the zoo's Frozen Tundra exhibit.
The photo exhibition, named Our Arctic Future, aims to raise public awareness on the threat that climate change poses to the Arctic ecosystems and polar bears. It was developed by the Natural History Museum of Denmark and commemorates 50 years of bilateral relations between Denmark and Singapore.
"We've teamed up with the Danish Embassy to give a wonderful photographic display about the polar region, but also to try and educate about the impact of global warming on the polar regions and get people to think a bit about how our behavior is affecting the world climate," said Mr Barclay.
