REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude occurred in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, Monday at 02:47 local time. The quake's epicenter was in 29 kilometers northeast Tarakan, according to data from Meteorology, Climatology Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
"The earthquake was felt in Tarakan which was resulting panic among residents on the coast for fear of tsunami," said Head of Data Information and Public Relations of National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, in an official statement, Monday (21/12).
He stated, the citizens hurriedly escaped to Mount Slumit and gathered in the courtyard of mosques and went to the other places that are considered safe.
Sutopo said, based on the data, there were seven houses in Selumit Beach Village, Tarakan, damaged. However, there was no causalities found. He added, in Juata Kerikil Village, there were also four houses that damaged.
