'Babad Padjajaran' proposed to be memory of the world of UNESCO

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Library and Regional Archives Agency (Bapusipda) of West Java was about to propose 'Babad Padjadjaran' (Padjajaran Chronicle) historical legacy to world cultural organization, UNESCO. It aimed to get recognition charter as 'Memory of the World' (MOW) as evidence of heritage of world literacy.

Head of Bapusipda West Java, Tati Iriani, said West Java has many unique historical evidences. One of them was the Chronicle of Padjadjaran which is an ancient manuscript that tells about the history of the kingdom of Padjadjaran.

"Chronicle of Padjadjaran is the forerunner of the Kingdom of Padjadjaran. Therefore, we want to propose but need to conduct a study first," said Tati to Republika.co.id, in Bandung, Wednesday (2/12).

Chronicle of Padjadjaran has uniqueness in the story. It did not only tell the history of the kingdom but also tell the everyday life of Sundanese people and the wisdom of Sundanese culture.

Professor of History of University of Padjadjaran, Nina Herliana Lubis, supported the proposal of the Chronicle of Padjadjaran as MOW. The chronicle even already tell how Sundanese people at that time went to pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

"Babad Padjajaran clearly illustrated the Sundanese life in early 19th century," said Nina.

The script that was written at the beginning of 19th century was fully owned Bapusipda West Java, so that its originality was guaranteed.
