WHO: HIV cases decreases by 35 percent

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- HIV infections cases in the world decreased by 35 percent since 2000. Not only that, deaths due to AIDS in the world were also decreased by 24 percent.

WHO regional coordinator of Southeast Asia, Tjandra Yoga Aditama, said there have been 34 million people in the world who died due to HIV. In 2014, 1.2 million people died and 36.9 million people lived with HIV.

In 2014, there were 150 million people in 129 countries who underwent HIV testing services. There were also 14.9 million people who received antiretroviral therapy (ART) and it rose to 16 million people at the end of 2015.

"The target of sustainable development goals (SDG) is among others to stop the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the world in 2030," he said, Monday (30/11).

ART has three roles in prevention of HIV infection in the world. It serves as a preventative therapy, as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and as post exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
