REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- The South Sumatra provincial government has been preparing and adding new infrastructure for the Asian Games in 2018.
"We are currently building a regional hospital in the face of the next international sporting event," South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin stated here on Tuesday.
The provincial government-owned hospital will also cater to the needs of the Asian Games participants.
Moreover, he noted that the government will also be increasing clean water capacity to meet the needs of the participants.
In addition, the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport will be expanded in order to ease operations and to increase the number of flights.
Moreover, the South Sumatra provincial government plans to expedite the construction of a monorail in Palembang city to support the 2018 Asian Games.
"The monorail will connect the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport to the Jakabaring integrated sporting areas and will be 25 kilometers in length. The construction should be started immediately to facilitate the transportation and mobilization of athletes, organizers, and guests from 40 participating Asian countries," Noerdin remarked on Tuesday (August 26).
He explained that the monorail construction was considered important due to the increasing road congestion in Palembang.
The government is expected to prioritize the construction of the monorail, discussions around which have been underway for a long time, the governor pointed out.
Head of Commission VI of the House of Representatives Dodi Reza had earlier noted that his party will oversee infrastructure development in the area.
All the development must be completed according to the plan, he added.
