REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDARLAMPUNG -- The Lampung provincial administration said it would soon build a coal fired power plant in cooperation with China.
The 700 megawatt capacity power plant will be built in a coal mine in the district of Mesuji, a spokesman of the provincial administration Adeham said here on Thursday.
The new power plant is expected to cope with shortage in power supply in the region especially during long drought, Adeham said.
He said the provincial administration already signed a memorandum of understanding with the president director of China Shenhua Energy Co. Ltd Guo Hua Electric Power Branch on plan to build the power plant.
"Lampung has a big energy resource such as geothermal and coal deposits such as one in in Mesuji," he said.
He said Lampung still is facing energy crisis as the new steam powered electric plant PLTU Sebalang has not started operation resulting in frequent blackouts.
Currently Lampung has power plants with a total capacity of only 540 MW as against requirement of 742 MW.
The province has to rely on additional supply of 294 MW from neighboring province of South Sumatra.
The problem now is that even South Sumatra already has a deficit in power supply.
