REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked the special province of Yogyakarta on Wednesday evening but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at 06.45 p.m., was in the sea some 120 km southwest of Bantul district, Yogyakarta, at a depth of 93 km, the chief of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in Yogyakarta, Tony Agus Wijaya, said on Wednesday.

"The quake was quite strong but did not cause a tsunami," he said.

The trigger of the quake which lasted for 10-15 seconds was not much different from that of the 5.2-magnitude quake on October 29, caused by the subduction of two continental plates in Yogyakarta, he said.

"Both were caused by the subduction (of the two plates)," he said.

The quake was felt by people living in the districts of Bantul and Kulon Progo and the municipality of Yogyakarta at IV-V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.

"The tremor was quite capable of causing cracks in the walls of old buildings," he said.

He said the office will analyze the impact of the quake.
