TNI AL dismantles pirates network in Strait of Malacca

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Western Fleet Quick Response (WFQR) IV team of Indonesian Fleet Command of West Region (Koarmabar) TNI AL (Navy) arrested one person named S (25 years old). This arrest was made in Lubuk Braja, Batam, Riau Islands.

S was allegedly a member of a pirate network, the group W, who was commonly operated in Strait of Malacca. The arrest was made on Monday (9/11) evening local time. S was one of the actors who robbed MV Merlin ship, on 22nd October in Strait of Malacca.

''This arrest is the result of development of WFQR team in against group M, which has been caught some time ago,'' said Chief Information Office of Koarmabar, Marine Lt. Col. TNI Ariris Miftachurrahman, in an official statement received by Republika, Tuesday (10/11 ).

Furthermore, Ariris revealed, based on examination conducted to members of the group M, it was known that usually they worked with the group W. The two groups of pirates were a criminal network for spare parts of cargo ships and electronic goods.

'In the arrest, S, who were from Indramayu, was in Housing Orchid Garden, Block G No. 3A, Lubuk Baja, Riau Islands,'' Ariris explained.

Based on interrogation that had been carried out on S, Ariris said, there were six other members who often committed piracy in Strait of Malacca. They were G, GL, S, T, W, and K. They were known to have entered in List of Wanted People (DPO) in MV Merlin ship piracy cases.
