REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) had been struck by earthquakes 21 times in a week. The earthquake shocks spread across seven districts in the province.

The seven districts were Alor that was still struck by the quake, South Timur Tengah (TTS), North Timur Tengah (TTU), Kupang, Ende, Southwest Sumba and West Manggarai. However, of the seven districts, the earthquakes that occurred had no tsunami impact.

Head of Data and Information of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Kupang, Sumawan, said the 21 earthquakes had different strength. It was starting from 3.4 to 6.2 on the Richter scale (SR).

"The strongest earthquake occurred in Alor with magnitude of 6.2, on Wednesday (4/11) last week. Meanwhile, the rest were earthquakes with small intensity," he said, Monday (9/11).

In Alor, from the data obtained, until this morning, an aftershock with a 4.0 magnitude strength was still happening. It was located in 8.09 southern latitudes (LS) -125.29 longitude (BT), 68 kilometers of Alor Timor Sea, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

"There have been 15 earthquakes that occurred in Alor," he added.

He added that the earthquakes that shook the seven districts were all classified as tectonic earthquakes. However, there were differences in the plates that were shifted in one region to another.

Furthermore, he explained, in Alor, the earthquakes were caused by a shift of same plate with the plate of Wetar Island, Sikka, Ende. Meanwhile, an earthquake in West Manggarai occurred because of a shift of the same plate with the plate of Sumba.

"While, the Australian plate starts from Papua, Maluku, in part of Alor, Timor, Southern Sumba, NTB, to Bali," said Sumawan.
