The meeting, attended by representatives of UNESCO's 195 member states, is being organized to discuss the direction of the organization's programs and activities for the next two years and rules related to funding and governance, Soelaiman remarked.

President of the General Conference of UNESCO Hao Ping, who is concurrently deputy education minister of China, officially inaugurated the session at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on Tuesday.

UNESCO's Executive Council Chairman Mohamed Sameh Amr, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, and Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon gave their remarks during the opening ceremony.

The session also marks the 70th anniversary of the organization, which will host a Leader's Forum on November 16 and 17, with the participation of an unprecedented number of heads of state and government.

On November 4, some 70 government ministers are scheduled to review UNESCO's education framework for action in light of the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

During the session of the General Conference, UNESCO's 195 member states will vote on the application put forth by Kosovo to become a member of the organization as recommended by UNESCO's Executive Board.

The UNESCO member states will also consider granting Associate Member status to the Caribbean island of Montserrat.

In 2015, Indonesia's proposals accepted by UNESCO include two biosphere reserves acknowledged as members of the Man and Biosphere Programme, a Global Geopark Network site, a Memory of the World archive, and a dance form inscribed in the Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
