Jokowi to fly directly to Palembang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON -- President Joko Widodo ended his visit to the US on Tuesday or ahead of schedule to directly fly to Palembang, South Sumatra, to check handling of forest fires in the region.

He left the Andrews Joint Air Force Base in Maryland, the US, at 17.50 pm to directly fly to Palembang along with his entourage, head of the press bureau of media and information of the presidential secretariat, Bey Machmudin, said.

The presidential plane is expected to arrive in Palembang through the same route it took earlier to fly from Indonesia to the US with transits at Schipol airport in Amsterdam and Abu Dhabi.

He said the President Jokowi as he is also known as received a report the number of fires in South Sumatra reached 146 hotspots while in Central Kalimantan 366.

In view of that the President decided to cancel his planned trip to West Coast, the US.

"Due to a lot of complaints from the public in connection with the impact of the haze from forest and peat land fires on health as well as on their social life I have decided to cancel my trip to West Coast," President Jokowi said.

President Jokowi and entourage also plan to inspect forest fires in Central Kalimantan.
