Tour de Bintan canceled due to smog

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BINTAN -- Two international tourism event this year were canceled due to prolonged smog in Sumatra. After Tour de Siak, event of Tour de Bintan which would be took place on 7th to 9th November 2015 was also canceled.

"There really is not canceled, but rescheduled to 1st to April 3rd 2016," said Deputy Foreign Tourism Marketing and Development of Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, Sunday (25/10).

According to Pitana, this decision was taken after meteorology and geophysics agency of Singapore declared that El Nino this year will be prolonged. So that the rain was predicted not to come until November.

"It means, the smog can not be appeased," he added.

Pitana said, this event actually could be held, because Air Pollution Standard Index at Bintan currently has decreased dramatically. However, because this event involves Singapore, they decided to postpone until the smog is really over.

"This event will be attended by participants from 30 countries," Pitana revealed.

In addition to Tour de Bintan, an event that had been confirmed to be canceled was Tour de Siak. The event which was planned to take place on 15th to 20th September was canceled because smoke condition in Riau at a dangerous level.
