Local govt to develop marine tourism in Karimata Island

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKADANA -- North Kayong Regency, West Kalimantan would develop a concept of marine tourism to boost local revenue for the welfare of people in North Kayong.

"We have declared that District of North Kayong will have a sustainable development of a nautical concept in improving local economy," said Regent of North Kayong, Hildi Hamid, in Sukadana, Wednesday (21/10).

One of the steps that would be taken was building various facilities and infrastructures that connects between islands.

While, one tourism place which was heavily promoted, was Karimata Island, which has an area of ​​approximately 77 thousand hectares. Karimata Island has status of Marine Nature Reserve.

"The island is promising underwater beauty that has not been widely known by people who like underwater activities in Indonesia," he added.

The island also has potential landscape which is inhabited by 1,400 inhabitants. Geographically, the island is in between Kalimantan and Sumatra. The clusters consist of two large islands, namely Karimata Island and Serutu Island.

There are also small islands that offer beauty, such as Kelumpang Island, Buluh Island, Belian Island, Busung Island, Segunung Island, Genting Island, Serungganing Island and Monkey Island.

Hildi said, improvement of facilities and infrastructure is including the provision of ships for transportatation. It is expected to solve problems in reaching Karimata as the "pearl" of the West Kalimantan.
