BMKG detects eight hotspots in Riau

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Pekanbaru detected eight hotspots in two districts in Riau, Saturday (17/10) morning.

"The eight hotspots are in Meranti Islands with five hotspots and in Siak with four hotspots," said head of BMKG Pekanbaru, Sugarin, Saturday (17/10).

The hotspots that indicated forest fires were with a confidence level of 70 percent.

Thin haze was also still observed in some areas in Riau. In Pekanbaru, the visibility was 1,200 meters, while in Rengat of Indragiri Hulu District was 1,000 meters, in Pelalawan was 2,500 meters and in Dumai was 700 meters.

Meanwhile, based on Terra and Aqua satellites on Saturday at 05.00 am, there were 85 hotspots observed in Sumatra.

Hotspots were still concentrated in South Sumatra with 74 points. Furthermore, there were also in Riau by nine points, Jambi and Riau Islands each by one hotspots. The number of hotspots in Sumatra dropped, compared to last Friday (16/10), which had reached 769 hotspots spread across eight provinces in Sumatra.

Efforts in forest fires extinguishing in Sumatra and Kalimantan still continued.

Head of Data Information and Public Relations of BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, through a press release, explained there were currently 32 helicopters and 22 thousand personnel who make efforts to extinguish fires in South Sumatra, Jambi, Central Kalimantan and Riau.
