REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PT PLN (Persero) with its subsidiaries, PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB) launched solar power plant (PLTS) Cirata of 1 megawatt (mw) in Purwakarta, West Java, Thursday (15/10).

Director of PLN, Nasri Sebayang, said that PLTS Cirata was designed specifically for research purposes related to enrichment of knowledge and experience for large-scale application of solar power in Indonesia. He explained, PLTS Cirata would be only operated during the day.

"PLN didn't think of any research and development place other than in here. Infrastructure and experts are already quite a lot," Nasri said in lauching of PLTS Cirata, Purwakarta, Thursday (15/10).

PLTS Cirata, later be functioned as monitor of the entire solar power in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of PJB, Muljo Adji, said PLTS Cirata was not as a backup power supply for Java and Bali, but specifically for a research center that will be used to build PLTS elsewhere. Muljo explained, the PLTS was built not to replace or add the supply of electricity in PLTA Cirata, but to supply power to approximately three districts in Purwakarta.

"The technology is more advanced and the coset is increasingly competitive. Those are the main reason of the construction of PLTS," he said.
