REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The Indonesian government needs to set up a special team to ensure the continuation of the deregulation program, included in the recently-announced economic policy packages, a researcher has said.
"The deregulation has been moving on the right track. So a special team is needed to ensure that the program continues as planned," Jose Rizal Damuri of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said at the campus of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) here on Thursday.
The special team/task force will be responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and restructuring overlapping regulations to ensure the continuation of the deregulation program, he said.
"Such policy package was once issued in 2013, but it lost track due to the absence of a special team," he said.
As for the special task force, the current government can follow the earlier template when the National Team to Accelerate Poverty Reduction (TNP2TKI) was set up during the tenure of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's government. The team was led by the then vice president, Boediono.
"The special team was successful in reducing poverty rate at that time," he said, adding that as per the precedent, the proposed special team for deregulation program should be led by Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
He said deregulation is part of President Joko Widodo's economic policy packages aimed to facilitate the inflow of investment to the country. The existence of many overlapping regulations hampers investment, he added.
