10 thousand infants suffering from ISPA in Palembang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Since thick haze occurred in South Sumatra as the result of land and forest fires, patients with upper respiratory infections (ISPA) has increased.  in Palembang, from July to September 2015, Department of Health of Palembang recorded that there were 44,993 patients with respiratory infection.

"Number of people with ISPA from July to September was always fluctuating. In July, in Palembang there were 12,227 people, then in August it increased to 17,292 patients. However, in September 2015 it fell by about 2,000 people, to become 15,474 people," said Head of Department of Health of Palembang, Anton Suwindro, Monday (5/10).

Of the 44,993 patients with acute respiratory infection, according to Anton, there were 10,056 infants who were also suffering. He explained, in July, infants with ISPA were about 4,100 patients, consisting of 1,978 male and 2,122 female. While in August, infants with ISPA were about 5,956 patients, consisting of 2,967 male and 2,989 female.

"Before entering the dry season and the occurrence of haze, Palembang's Health Department had anticipated," said Anton.

Moreover, Department of Health of Palembang also provided recommendations for the children's activities in school.

"We ask to reduce activities outside of school," he said.
