REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya city government in East Java is studying a technical plan for the construction of freight train line to Teluk Lamong multipurpose terminal.
The city government will soon discuss details of the technical plan, Head of the Surabaya City Development Planning Agency (Bappeko) Agus Sonhaji said here on Sunday.
"In terms of time and cost, (the freight train line) will make freight transportation more efficiently. This will be advantage for Surabaya as many businessmen will eye the city. As a result, the Surabaya economy will grow at a higher pace," he said.
Noting that Surabaya is the city of commerce, he said effective and efficient infrastructure which supports supply chains is one of the important elements to enable Surabaya to compete with other cities.
Therefore, production cost including transportation must be kept down. For its part, western outer ring road in the southern tip will be connected to the Surabaya-Mojokerto toll road.
As such, goods can be transported from and to the port through the toll road and part of goods from southern Surabaya, Sidoarjo and Mojokerto can be transported to the port without passing through the city, he said.
He said Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has held a coordination meeting with the president director of state railway company PT KAI and the director general of train affairs at the Transportation Ministry during the signing of a cooperation agreement to develop tram line in the city.
