REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Sorong, West Papua, Thursday (24/9). The earthquake occurred at 22:53:28 GMT.
Head of Data Center Information and Public Relations of National Disaster Management Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, explained the center of the earthquake was in the sea at a depth of 10 km and the epicenter was in 31 km from Northeast of Sorong, West Papua or 68 km from Northeast Raja Ampat, West Papua or 311 km from Northwest Manokwari, West Papua.
"The earthquake didn't cause tsunami," said Sutopo, as cited from the official website of BNPB, Friday (25/9).
The source of the earthquake, he added, came from Sorong fault. The shock felt up to 15 seconds and the Residents had scrambled out of the house.
"The impact of the earthquake is still being investigated.. There has been no report of casualties and property damage," Sutopo stated.
