REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Bank Indonesia (BI) believed that the country's balance of trade which recorded a surplus in August will give good contributions to the current account performance in the third quarter.

"It (the surplus) will have a positive impact on the third-quarter current account performance which is getting better," Executive Director of Bank Indonesia's Communication Department Tirta Segara said here on Wednesday.

Indonesia's balance of trade recorded a surplus of US$0.43 billion in August, particularly fueled by a surplus in the balance of trade in the non-oil/non-gas sector and a declining deficit in the balance of trade in the oil and gas sector.

However, the surplus in the balance of trade was lower than that of July when its was US$1.39 billion.

The declining surplus in the balance of trade in the non-oil/non-gas sector was caused by non-oil/non-gas imports which exceeded non-oil/non-gas exports.

The country's non-oil/non-gas imports in August rose by 30.48 percent month-to-month, particularly fueled by the increasing import of iron and steel, plastics, machines and mechanical appliances, machines and electrical appliances.

"The rising import of the groups of goods sends an initial signal of rising economic activities in the future," he said.

He said the 11.23 percent rise in the export of non-oil/non-gas commodities was driven by the rising export of manufactured goods (jewelry, vehicles and spare parts, machines/mechanical appliances) and primary commodities (coffee, tea, spices, rubber and rubber product).
