Minister: Failed harvest to reach 25 thousand hectares

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, said agricultural land that have failed harvest or fuso by drought reached 25 thousand hectares.

"Already reached 25 thousand hectares or even almost 30 thousand hectares," he said, Monday (24/8).

He said agricultural land have widen fuso was located in Central Java and West Java. The number of the land was increased from 20 thousand hectares to 25 thousand hectares and nearly 30 thousand hectares.

"It increased because the drought," he said.

As anticipation of the expansion of failed harvest of agriculture, The Ministry of Agriculture will make efforts to optimize all irrigated areas that have a permanent dam.

"Technical irrigation area built by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing was 500 thousand hectares," he added.

The ministry will also build shallow wells, distribute water pump, and make artificial rain. To cover loss due to fuso in in 25 thousand hectares of agricultural land, the ministry will accelerate harvest by planting addition in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

The ministry will also optimize the areas that are affected by El Nino but still have a source of water.

"We optimize irrigation water or a dam or something by using 21,000 pumps," he said.
